"Passages," an exhibition of collage paintings by Nancy Rubens, will be on view April 8-June 15 at the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St. To celebrate the opening, the center is hosting a reception 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8. The event, which will feature a formal discussion of the work by the artist and Yale faculty, is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Rubens describes her work as a "visual stream of consciousness, a string of associations brought together into a coherent whole." The paintings incorporate the ephemera of everyday life into collages. Many of the papers are found by chance, and many are collected for the artist by others. "I want instinct to play against structure, raw energy to play against calm refinement," says the artist.
